Preserving one of Manchester’s most important historic estates
Client: Manchester City Council
Conlon Construction delivered a multi-phase restoration and repair programme at Heaton Hall, carefully conserving one of the UK’s finest Grade I listed country houses and a landmark at the heart of Manchester’s most visited public park.
Working on behalf of Manchester City Council, the project combined specialist heritage expertise with meticulous planning to restore significant elements of the building while protecting its architectural integrity and historic significance.
The Challenge
Heaton Hall required a complex programme of conservation works across multiple areas of the building, ranging from masonry and roofing repairs to window restoration and structural remedial works.
Given the age and significance of the property, every phase demanded a sensitive approach, with works carefully planned and adapted to respond to the challenges often uncovered when working within historic buildings.
Our Solution
Delivered across four phases, the programme included:
- Conservation and repair of the South-facing sandstone ashlar façade
- Stone replacement and like-for-like repointing works
- Restoration of historic sash and casement windows
- Extensive roof repairs
- Dry rot remediation
- Crawl duct repairs
- Structural and masonry conservation works
- Restoration of windows across the central block, east wing and west wing
- Full refurbishment of the historic Orangery
- Mechanical and electrical upgrades
- Internal plastering and restoration works
- External render repairs
Throughout the programme, specialist conservation techniques were employed to ensure the building’s heritage value was protected while improving its long-term condition.
The Outcome
The completed restoration programme has safeguarded the future of one of Manchester’s most significant heritage assets, ensuring Heaton Hall remains a focal point for the hundreds of thousands of visitors who enjoy Heaton Park each year.
By carefully repairing and conserving key architectural features across the estate, the project has extended the lifespan of the building, improved its resilience and preserved its historic character for future generations.
The scheme demonstrates Conlon’s expertise in delivering complex heritage projects where craftsmanship, conservation knowledge and long-term stewardship are critical to success.
We would like to thank all the team for their dedication to the project, and for their passion and enthusiasm which have ensured that a positive legacy has been left for the future.
