Conlon Construction

Peterloo Memorial, Manchester

Creating a lasting tribute to a defining moment in British history

Client: Manchester City Council

Conlon Construction was honoured to deliver the Peterloo Memorial in the heart of Manchester city centre, creating a permanent monument that commemorates those who lost their lives during the Peterloo Massacre of 1819 and celebrates the enduring fight for democracy and social justice.

Designed by internationally renowned artist Jeremy Deller, the memorial has become an important civic landmark and place of reflection within one of the UK’s most historically significant cities.

The Challenge

Located in a busy city-centre environment adjacent to Manchester Central, the project required the delivery of a complex public monument while maintaining safe pedestrian access and minimising disruption to visitors, businesses and events taking place nearby.

The construction process also demanded exceptional attention to detail, with specialist stonework sourced, crafted and assembled to meet the exacting standards of the artist’s vision.

Our Solution

Conlon delivered the project through a carefully coordinated programme of enabling, civil engineering and specialist construction works, including:

  • Site preparation and removal of existing infrastructure
  • Removal and reinstatement of stone paving
  • Construction of reinforced concrete foundations
  • Installation of bespoke pre-machined stone components
  • Coordination of specialist stone sourced from eight UK quarries
  • Management of intricate carving and engraving works
  • Close collaboration with Trafford-based stonemasons Mather & Ellis
  • Careful phasing to maintain public access and minimise disruption around Manchester Central

Every stage of the project was delivered with sensitivity and respect for the significance of the memorial and the events it commemorates.

The Outcome

The completed Peterloo Memorial provides Manchester with a powerful and enduring place of remembrance, reflection and public gathering.

Standing as a tribute to those affected by the Peterloo Massacre, the monument has become an important cultural and educational landmark, helping ensure the story and legacy of the events of 1819 continue to be understood by future generations.

The project demonstrates Conlon’s ability to deliver technically complex public realm and heritage projects where craftsmanship, stakeholder management and cultural significance are equally important to successful delivery.

The Peterloo workmanship is first class and is a credit to Conlon and their suppliers.
