Conlon Construction

Altrincham Grammar School for Girls

Enhancing a leading school while keeping learning uninterrupted

Client: Bright Futures Educational Trust

Conlon Construction delivered a major three-phase refurbishment programme at Altrincham Grammar School for Girls, creating new sports, teaching and wellbeing facilities while ensuring the school remained fully operational throughout construction.

Working closely with Bright Futures Educational Trust, the project was carefully planned and phased to minimise disruption, allowing pupils and staff to continue teaching and learning within a live school environment.

The Challenge

The project required significant investment in the school’s facilities while maintaining uninterrupted educational provision. With pupils and staff occupying the campus throughout the works, careful sequencing, stakeholder communication and temporary accommodation were critical to the successful delivery of the programme.

Our Solution

Conlon delivered the project across three carefully managed phases, including:

  • Construction of a new four-court sports hall
  • New changing rooms, showers and welfare facilities
  • Four additional classrooms
  • Reconfiguration of existing tennis courts
  • External façade improvements and recladding works
  • Conversion of an existing gymnasium into teaching accommodation
  • Creation of a new dance studio
  • New staff facilities and support spaces
  • Additional storage and ancillary accommodation
  • Removal of temporary classrooms following completion
  • Comprehensive landscaping and external improvements

Each phase was designed to maximise operational continuity while delivering meaningful improvements to the school’s learning and sporting environments.

The Outcome

The completed development has significantly enhanced the school’s educational and extracurricular offer, providing modern teaching spaces, improved sports facilities and upgraded external environments that support both academic achievement and student wellbeing.

Despite the complexity of delivering a multi-phase project within a live school setting, the programme was completed with minimal disruption to day-to-day operations through close collaboration with school leadership and stakeholders.

The quality and success of the scheme were recognised nationally when the project was shortlisted for Project of the Year at the Education Estates Awards 2022, reflecting the strength of both its design and delivery.
