Creating a modern sports hub to support learning, wellbeing and community use
Client: Department for Education
Conlon Construction delivered a new Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) and supporting facilities at Bolton University Collegiate School, transforming a vacant site into a high-quality sports and education resource designed to support the school’s transition from a University Technical College to a University Collegiate School.
The development provides pupils with year-round access to modern sporting facilities while enhancing the wider campus environment.
The Challenge
The project required the redevelopment of an unused site into a versatile sports and teaching facility capable of supporting a broad range of activities while integrating seamlessly with the existing school campus.
Construction activities also needed to be carefully managed around a live educational environment to minimise disruption to staff, pupils and day-to-day school operations.
Our Solution
Conlon delivered a comprehensive new-build programme, including:
- Construction of a floodlit Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA)
- Installation of a high-performance 3G sports surface
- Facilities for football, cricket, tennis, badminton, basketball and athletics
- New two-storey ancillary building
- Modern changing facilities
- Dedicated teaching and learning accommodation
- New parking provision
- External works and landscaping
- Site infrastructure and access improvements
Close collaboration with the school throughout the programme ensured construction activities were carefully coordinated around the operational requirements of the campus.
The Outcome
The completed development provides Bolton University Collegiate School with a flexible, all-weather sports facility that supports both curriculum and extracurricular activities throughout the year.
By combining modern sporting infrastructure with dedicated teaching and support accommodation, the project has enhanced the school’s educational and wellbeing offer while creating a valuable asset for future generations of pupils.
The success of the scheme was underpinned by a collaborative approach and commitment to stakeholder engagement, with the client recognising the team’s professionalism and dedication throughout the delivery of the project.
