Lancaster Road Primary School, Morecambe

March 10, 2016 - News

We are underway with a £2.4m project to extend a primary school once attended by comedy great Eric Morecambe.

Originally built in 1932, Lancaster Road Primary School is being extended by 850 sqm (9,150 sq ft) to provide six new classrooms, a multi-use hall, meeting rooms, new entrance, plant room, staff area, further extension to the existing kitchen, a new, larger parking area and new tarmac playground.

The scheme, commissioned by Lancashire County Council is part of a multi-phase programme to increase capacity from a two-form to three-form entry school, taking pupil numbers from 420 to 630 pupils by the 2020/2021 academic year.

The expansion is required due to the rising numbers of primary school age children in the Morecambe and Heysham area. The project, which will utilise materials to match the existing building, will be completed in time for the September 2016 intake.

As a member of the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS), we have undertaken and invested in a number of community initiatives, which will continue throughout the build. In addition, we have supported the Sports for Schools campaign which encourages physical activity and raises funds for PE equipment.

Shaun Smith, Site Manager commented “This project is being undertaken in a live environment and by utilising our extensive experience in the education sector, we have worked together with the school to devise a suitable programme of works that will cause minimal disruption to pupils, staff and parents.  This project will provide much needed space for the school and give the children room to grow in a modern environment.”

Mr P Gabriel, Headteacher at Lancaster Road Primary School, added “There’s a real buzz of excitement across the school and everyone is excitedly looking forward to seeing the finished article.  “It was getting a little cramped and this new space will allow us to further develop our curriculum.”
