Conlon Construction delivered the refurbishment of the Grade II listed Altrincham Market, carefully restoring its historic character while enhancing its flexibility as one of Greater Manchester’s most popular food, retail and events destinations.
Working on behalf of Trafford Council, the project combined heritage conservation with modern upgrades, ensuring the market could continue to evolve while remaining true to its historic roots.
The Challenge
As a much-loved town-centre landmark and active trading venue, Altrincham Market required a sensitive refurbishment that preserved its architectural character while improving functionality for traders, visitors and event organisers.
The works needed to be carefully managed within a live environment, ensuring the building remained fit for modern use while respecting its listed status and historic significance.
Our Solution
Conlon delivered a comprehensive programme of restoration and improvement works, including:
- Restoration of the historic external glazed canopy
- Reinstatement of original market stalls and shutters
- Roof repairs and weatherproofing works
- Installation of new lighting throughout
- Construction of two new entrance porches
- Additional storage facilities for market operations
- Refurbishment of existing awnings
- Upgrades to basement toilet facilities
- Installation of glass blocks to basement windows
- Repairs to surrounding paving and hard landscaping
- Mechanical ventilation systems to improve comfort and usability
