Conlon Construction

Gorton Primary School, Manchester

Delivering a new school while learning continued uninterrupted

Client: Department for Education

Conlon Construction delivered a new two-form entry primary school and nursery at Gorton Primary School, creating a modern educational environment while ensuring pupils and staff could continue learning throughout the construction programme.

Delivered through the Department for Education Construction Framework, the project required careful planning, phased delivery and close stakeholder engagement to transform the site without disrupting day-to-day school life.

The Challenge

The project involved replacing an existing school within a live operational environment, requiring new facilities to be constructed before the existing buildings could be removed.

Maintaining a safe, secure and fully functioning school throughout the programme was essential, with clear communication and careful coordination needed at every stage to minimise disruption for pupils, staff and parents.

Our Solution

Conlon delivered a phased programme of works, including:

  • Enabling works and utility infrastructure upgrades
  • Design and construction of a new two-storey primary school
  • Dedicated nursery provision
  • Associated external works and site infrastructure
  • Demolition of existing school buildings following occupation of the new facility
  • Final landscaping and site completion works
  • Safe segregation of construction and school operations throughout the programme

Close collaboration with the school community ensured teaching and learning could continue uninterrupted while construction progressed around the live campus.

The Outcome

The completed development provides Gorton Primary School with a modern, purpose-built learning environment designed to support current and future generations of pupils.

By replacing ageing facilities with a high-quality new school and nursery, the project has created an inspiring environment that supports educational achievement, wellbeing and community engagement.

The scheme also delivered significant environmental benefits, including the provision of more than 100 trees through The Woodland Trust to enhance the adjacent public nature and wildlife area, helping offset carbon emissions while creating a lasting environmental legacy for the local community.

From the very early feasibility phase of the project through to securing planning consent, and into the construction delivery phase, the skill and dedication of the whole team was second to none.
