The Yan, Grizedale Forest

Creating a sustainable learning destination in the heart of the Lake District

Client: Forestry England

Conlon Construction delivered the transformation of The Yan at Grizedale Forest, creating a modern education and learning facility that blends contemporary design with the natural beauty of one of England’s most distinctive forest landscapes.

Working on behalf of Forestry England, the project carefully combined the restoration of existing stone buildings with a high-quality extension, creating a flexible space designed to support education, engagement and environmental learning for future generations.

The Challenge

Located within the Lake District National Park, the project demanded a sensitive approach that respected the surrounding landscape while delivering a modern, sustainable facility capable of supporting a wide range of educational activities.

The design needed to balance heritage, sustainability and functionality, ensuring the new development sat naturally within its woodland setting.

Our Solution

Conlon delivered a combination of refurbishment and new-build works, including:

  • Extension and alteration of existing stone buildings
  • Bespoke timber construction and detailing throughout
  • In-house manufacture, assembly and installation of specialist joinery
  • Cedar shingle roofing
  • Living sedum roof system
  • Sustainable biomass heating infrastructure
  • Wood pellet biomass boiler installation
  • Modern learning and education spaces
  • High-quality finishes designed to complement the surrounding environment

The use of natural materials and sustainable technologies was central to the project, helping minimise environmental impact while enhancing the building’s connection to its forest setting.

The Outcome

The completed development has created a distinctive education and learning hub that supports Forestry England’s work in inspiring people to engage with nature, sustainability and the environment.

By combining contemporary architecture with traditional materials and low-carbon technologies, The Yan demonstrates how thoughtful design can enhance both visitor experience and environmental performance.

Today, the facility provides an important base for educational programmes, community activities and environmental learning within one of the UK’s most celebrated natural landscapes.
