Transforming a school while keeping learning at the heart of every decision
Client: Stockport Council
Conlon Construction delivered a major six-phase refurbishment programme at Hazel Grove Primary School, modernising key facilities across the campus while ensuring pupils and staff could continue learning in a fully operational school environment.
Working on behalf of Stockport Council, the project upgraded the school’s infrastructure, teaching spaces and learning environments to create a modern facility designed to support future generations of pupils.
The Challenge
Delivering extensive refurbishment works within a live primary school required careful planning, communication and coordination. With teaching and learning continuing throughout the programme, maintaining a safe and effective environment for pupils, staff and visitors was critical.
The six-phase programme also needed to minimise disruption while allowing substantial upgrades to be completed across large areas of the school.
Our Solution
Conlon delivered a comprehensive refurbishment programme, including:
- Full replacement of mechanical and electrical systems
- Internal remodelling and refurbishment works
- Replastering and redecoration throughout
- New floor finishes
- Furniture, fixtures and equipment installation
- Roof replacement works to the main buildings
- Temporary classroom accommodation
- Phased occupation and handover strategy
- Site-wide upgrades to learning environments
Temporary classrooms were installed on the school grounds, allowing pupils to move seamlessly between phases while construction progressed safely around the live educational setting.
The Outcome
The completed refurbishment has transformed the learning environment at Hazel Grove Primary School, providing pupils and staff with modern, high-quality facilities that support both educational outcomes and wellbeing.
Despite the complexity of delivering six phases of work within a busy residential area and live school environment, the project maintained strong relationships with the school and wider community throughout.
This commitment to stakeholder engagement was recognised through a perfect score of 9 out of 9 for community engagement from the Considerate Constructors Scheme, reflecting the care, professionalism and communication demonstrated throughout the programme.
The project showcases Conlon’s expertise in delivering complex education refurbishments where operational continuity, stakeholder management and quality delivery are equally important to success.
The standard of work was excellent and we have not been left with any defects. Despite a global pandemic the team continued to work and the handover was completed on time.
