Expanding one of the North West’s leading university sports facilities
Client: Lancaster University
Conlon Construction delivered the expansion of Lancaster University’s Sports Centre, creating a modern, Sport England-compliant sports hall designed to support students, staff and the wider community.
The development enhances the university’s sporting infrastructure, providing high-quality facilities capable of accommodating a broad range of sports, activities and wellbeing programmes.
The Challenge
The project required the seamless integration of a major new sports facility with the existing sports centre, ensuring the extension complemented the operational requirements, appearance and functionality of the wider campus.
Alongside delivering a facility capable of meeting national sporting standards, the project also needed to achieve ambitious sustainability targets and support the university’s long-term commitment to environmental performance.
Our Solution
Conlon delivered a purpose-built extension incorporating:
- A new Sport England-compliant sports hall
- Structural steel frame construction
- Composite cladding and architectural blockwork façade
- Integration with the existing sports centre
- New drainage and attenuation infrastructure
- Associated landscaping and external works
- Modern building services throughout
- Flexible sporting and activity spaces
- Sustainability measures supporting BREEAM accreditation
The project was delivered to exacting quality standards, ensuring the facility was ready to support a wide range of sporting, recreational and community activities from day one.
The Outcome
The completed development has significantly enhanced Lancaster University’s sporting offer, providing a modern, flexible facility that supports participation, performance and wellbeing across the campus community.
Delivered with a defect-free handover and achieving BREEAM Excellent certification, the project demonstrates Conlon’s ability to combine quality construction, sustainability and operational excellence within higher education environments.
Beyond the physical building, the project also helped shape future planning policy discussions, providing Lancaster City Council with a successful example of how Employment and Skills Plans can be embedded within major developments to maximise local social value outcomes.
