Revitalising an iconic landmark at the heart of Preston
Client: Lancashire County Council
Conlon Construction delivered the transformation of Preston Bus Station, one of the UK’s most celebrated examples of Brutalist architecture, creating a safer, more efficient and more welcoming transport hub while preserving the character of this Grade II listed landmark.
Working on behalf of Lancashire County Council, the project carefully balanced heritage conservation with modern passenger needs, enhancing the experience for the 50,000 people who use the station every day.
The Challenge
As one of Preston’s most recognisable buildings and a nationally significant listed structure, the Bus Station required extensive refurbishment while remaining fully operational as a major transport interchange.
The project needed to improve passenger flow, accessibility and public realm provision without reducing capacity, while respecting the architectural significance that has made the building internationally recognised.
Our Solution
Conlon delivered a comprehensive programme of refurbishment, reconfiguration and conservation works, including:
- Reorganisation of bus and coach operations to improve efficiency
- Relocation of coach facilities
- Creation of a new passenger information hub
- Rationalisation of retail accommodation
- Repairs to the Grade II listed concrete structure
- Refurbishment of the main concourse
- Alterations and improvements to parking facilities
- Creation of a new public space on the city-centre frontage
- Highway and road layout improvements to enhance accessibility
- Sustainable reuse of original Iroko hardwood window frames, repurposed into bespoke public seating
Throughout the project, heritage conservation remained central to the delivery strategy, ensuring the building’s distinctive character was preserved while improving functionality for modern users.
The Outcome
The completed refurbishment has transformed the passenger experience at Preston Bus Station, creating a more accessible, efficient and welcoming environment while retaining the architectural features that make the building so distinctive.
Improved circulation, enhanced public spaces and upgraded facilities have helped secure the long-term future of one of Lancashire’s most important civic landmarks, demonstrating how heritage assets can be successfully adapted to meet modern transport needs.
The project received widespread industry recognition, including:
- RIBA North West Award
- RIBA North West Conservation Award
- RIBA North West Client of the Year Award
- RIBA National Award
Today, Preston Bus Station stands as a benchmark for heritage-led regeneration, combining architectural preservation with meaningful improvements for the thousands of people who rely on it every day.
