Delivering a modern fire station built around operational excellence
Client: West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service
Conlon Construction delivered the redevelopment of Rothwell Fire Station for West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, creating a modern, energy-efficient facility designed to support frontline emergency response for decades to come.
The project replaced ageing accommodation with a purpose-built station that enhances operational efficiency while providing improved facilities for firefighters and support personnel.
The Challenge
The redevelopment had to be delivered while maintaining emergency response capability from the site, with a temporary fire station operating throughout construction.
Balancing operational continuity, safety and programme delivery required careful planning and close collaboration with the Fire & Rescue Service throughout the project.
Our Solution
Conlon delivered a complete demolition and rebuild programme, including:
- Demolition of the existing fire station and garage facilities
- Retention and integration of the existing training tower
- Construction of a new two-bay appliance garage
- Modern office accommodation
- Staff welfare, rest and recreation facilities
- New service yard and parking areas
- Energy-efficient LED lighting systems
- Enhanced thermal performance measures
- Sustainable water reuse infrastructure
Materials and finishes were carefully selected to complement retained buildings while improving long-term performance and operational efficiency.
The Outcome
The completed station provides firefighters with a modern, fit-for-purpose environment that supports both emergency response and ongoing training requirements.
Through improved sustainability measures, enhanced operational facilities and modern building performance, the project has created a resilient and future-ready asset for West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service.
We were faced with the massive task of the phased build of a new fire station on the same site on which firefighters continued to operate from temporary working accommodation. This brought considerable challenges throughout the programme but the strong relationship between Conlon Construction and West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service resulted in all obstacles being overcome and a new modern and efficient fire station being realised.
I would personally like to thank Conlon Construction and the Rothwell crews for their considerable assistance in making this project work.
