Creating a landmark destination for climbing, fitness and community activity

Conlon Construction delivered Summit Up Climbing Centre in Oldham, a purpose-built facility designed to inspire participation, promote active lifestyles and provide climbing opportunities for people of all ages and abilities.
Developed for The Stoller Charitable Trust, the centre has become one of the region’s leading indoor climbing destinations, offering dedicated facilities for recreational climbers, beginners and experienced enthusiasts alike.
The Challenge
The project required the delivery of a specialist sports and leisure facility capable of accommodating multiple climbing disciplines within a safe, accessible and engaging environment.
Alongside the technical requirements of the climbing installations, the development needed to provide high-quality infrastructure, services and external landscaping to support long-term community use.
Our Solution
Conlon delivered the facility from the ground up, including:

- Suspended and ground-bearing concrete slabs
- Structural steel frame construction
- High-performance external cladding system
- Full mechanical and electrical installations
- Dedicated clip and climb facilities
- Lead climbing areas
- Bouldering zones
- New foul and surface water drainage infrastructure
- Hard and soft landscaping works
The Outcome
The completed centre provides a modern, accessible and welcoming environment where people can develop new skills, improve wellbeing and participate in a wide range of climbing activities.
Designed to support both recreational and structured use, Summit Up has created a valuable community asset while helping broaden access to sport and physical activity across Oldham and the surrounding region.
The project was delivered in accordance with the Considerate Constructors Scheme and achieved an outstanding score of 43 out of 45, recognising the care, professionalism and commitment demonstrated throughout construction.
