The Grand Venue, Clitheroe

Transforming a historic cinema into one of Lancashire’s leading performance venues

Client: The Grand at Clitheroe

Conlon Construction delivered the transformation of a Grade II listed former cinema into The Grand, a state-of-the-art arts, performance and recording venue that has become a cultural focal point for Clitheroe and the wider Ribble Valley.

The project combined heritage restoration, complex structural works and specialist acoustic design to create a professional performance space capable of supporting live entertainment, music production and community events.

The Challenge

The redevelopment of the historic building presented significant technical and logistical challenges. Extensive structural interventions were required to both the front and rear of the property, while the sensitive town-centre location demanded careful management to minimise disruption and maintain access for neighbouring residents throughout the works.

A key requirement was the delivery of recording facilities capable of achieving BBC acoustic standards, requiring meticulous planning, detailed investigations and close collaboration across the project team.

Our Solution

Conlon delivered a comprehensive programme of refurbishment, restoration and remodelling works, including:

  • Major structural alterations and strengthening works
  • Creation of a new 350-seat auditorium
  • BBC-standard recording studios
  • Individual audio production suites
  • Extensive backstage and support facilities
  • Contemporary glazed entrance foyer
  • High-quality bespoke joinery throughout
  • Cyber café and visitor facilities
  • Acoustic design and specialist construction works to meet broadcast-quality standards
  • Full restoration and adaptation of the Grade II listed building

Throughout the project, careful consideration was given to preserving the character of the original building while creating a modern, high-performance venue.

The Outcome

The completed development has transformed a long-vacant cinema into a thriving cultural destination that supports live performance, music production, education and community engagement.

By combining heritage preservation with specialist modern facilities, The Grand now provides a professional-standard venue that attracts performers, audiences and creative talent from across the region, securing the future of an important historic building while enriching the cultural offer of Clitheroe.

Today, it stands as one of Lancashire’s leading arts and entertainment venues, demonstrating how historic buildings can be successfully repurposed to meet modern community needs.

Through your expertise and personal approach, you took our vision and blueprint, then transformed a tired old building into a world class, state-of-the-art venue.
