Transforming a landmark building into a thriving educational environment
Client: Tauheedul Islam Faith, Education and Community Trust
Conlon Construction delivered the transformation of an existing multi-storey commercial building into Eden Boys’ School, creating a modern faith-based secondary school for more than 700 pupils in the heart of Preston.
The project combined extensive refurbishment, new-build construction and complex stakeholder management to create a high-quality educational environment while ensuring pupils could continue their education uninterrupted throughout the programme.
The Challenge
The project required the complete transformation of an existing concrete-framed building into a modern secondary school, including specialist teaching facilities, sports provision and upgraded infrastructure throughout.
At the same time, a solution was needed to accommodate the school’s entire pupil cohort during construction, ensuring education could continue without disruption while the works were carried out.
Our Solution
Conlon delivered a comprehensive refurbishment and expansion programme, including:
- Full refurbishment of the existing multi-storey building
- Extensive external re-cladding works
- New curtain walling installation
- Complete mechanical and electrical fit-out
- 14 new classrooms
- Four fully equipped science laboratories
- Staff, administration and support facilities
- New commercial kitchen and dining provision
- Full furniture, fixtures and equipment installation
- Bespoke 600m² four-court sports hall
- Changing facilities and ancillary accommodation
- External sports areas and landscaping improvements
To maintain continuity of education, Conlon also facilitated temporary accommodation for the entire school community for a full academic year, allowing construction to progress safely and efficiently without impacting learning.
The Outcome
The completed development provides Eden Boys’ School with a modern, purpose-built educational environment that supports academic achievement, wellbeing and personal development.
Alongside high-quality teaching facilities, the new sports hall and outdoor recreation areas have significantly enhanced the school’s wider educational offer, creating opportunities for both learning and physical activity.
What truly sets this project apart is the commitment to the people using the building. By securing temporary accommodation for the entire school during construction, Conlon ensured pupils and staff remained fully supported throughout the programme, demonstrating a practical, people-first approach that extended far beyond the construction works themselves.
Eden Boys’ School, Preston, is built on a mission of educational excellence, character development and service to communities and provides its pupils with a wealth of enrichment opportunities through its leadership specialism. The school’s new building offers the very best of technology and modern architecture and its facilities will play a pivotal role in helping our pupils to realise their ambitions. They are all extremely excited and eager to move in this September. Thank you to all the people who worked tirelessly to make this project a reality.
