Expanding a Forest School for future generations
Client: Trafford Council
Conlon Construction delivered the expansion of Firs Primary School for Trafford Council, increasing capacity from a two-form entry to a three-form entry school while enhancing the learning environment for pupils and staff.
Combining new-build and refurbishment works, the project was carefully designed to reflect the school’s Forest School ethos, creating stronger connections between indoor learning spaces and the natural environment that surrounds them.
The Challenge
The project needed to increase capacity while maintaining day-to-day school operations and preserving the unique character that makes Firs Primary School distinctive.
As a Forest School, the design had to encourage outdoor learning and maximise engagement with the extensive grounds, ensuring the new facilities felt fully integrated with the school’s environmental and educational philosophy.
Our Solution
Conlon delivered a comprehensive programme of expansion and refurbishment works, including:
- Construction of a new two-storey extension
- Nine new classrooms
- Dedicated studio space
- Group teaching and breakout rooms
- Additional welfare and support facilities
- Refurbishment and remodelling of existing accommodation
- Improved circulation and learning environments
- Enhanced connections between indoor and outdoor spaces
- External works supporting outdoor learning activities
Careful phasing and programme management ensured disruption was kept to a minimum, with temporary accommodation provided to maintain continuity of education throughout construction.
The Outcome
The completed development has increased the school’s capacity while creating a learning environment that fully embraces its Forest School identity.
By blending contemporary educational facilities with strong links to the outdoors, the project provides pupils with greater opportunities for exploration, creativity and experiential learning, both inside and outside the classroom.
The extension feels like a natural continuation of the existing school, supporting future growth while strengthening the values and educational approach that make Firs Primary School such an important part of its local community.
