REFURBISHING A MODERN POLICE CUSTODY SUITE

Conlon Construction refurbished the Longsight Police Custody Suite for Greater Manchester Police, creating a modern, purpose-built environment designed to raise the standard of detainee safety, staff welfare and operational performance.

The project focused on updating the space to ensure it met safeguarding requirements, with dedicated attention to the welfare of children, juveniles and vulnerable individuals passing through the facility.

The Challenge

The project required updates across the custody suite to meet current safeguarding requirements. Beyond the cells, this extended to ancillary areas, including the charge desk, additional interview rooms, improved medical spaces and a new forensic medical facility.

Conlon delivered a comprehensive programme of refurbishment works, including:

• Full upgrade of 44 cells
• Anti-ligature measures
• New sanitaryware and revised layouts
• Enhanced CCTV, intercom, fire alarm and lighting systems
• Dedicated refurbished spaces for children and juveniles
• Reconfigured charge desk
• Additional interview rooms
• Improved medical spaces
• New forensic medical facility
• Enlarged van dock exit
• Full replacement of mechanical and electrical systems
• New secure perimeter fencing
• Coordination of client-nominated subcontractors across fire, security, CCTV and FF&E

The Outcome

Greater Manchester Police now has a custody suite built to modern policing standards that properly supports the welfare of detainees, staff and vulnerable individuals.
