CONSTRUCTING A SPECIALIST EDUCATION ANNEXE TO SUPPORT CHILDREN WITH SEND
Client: Salford City Council
Conlon Construction delivered a £4.8m specialist education annexe at Springwood Primary School in Salford, providing additional provision for up to 40 pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Known as The Nest, the 500.7m² building was delivered ahead of the new academic year to provide a dedicated learning environment for children aged four to 11.
The Challenge
The project required a purpose-built facility to support pupils with additional learning needs, providing flexible teaching spaces alongside specialist facilities and access to outdoor areas. The works also needed to be coordinated within the school environment, with the building ready for use ahead of the new academic year.
Our Solution
Conlon delivered the new annexe for Salford City Council through the North West Construction Hub’s Design and Build framework, including:
- Four classrooms designed to support specialist learning
- Flexible learning spaces and quiet rooms
- Dedicated storage and staff facilities
- Pupil toilet and sensory facilities
- Indoor and outdoor learning areas
- External landscaping, pathways and fencing
- New trees and wildflower planting
- A living green-screen fence
- Sustainable drainage measures, including 6m soakaways
- Biodiversity measures designed to achieve a 10% biodiversity net gain
The Outcome
The completed Nest annexe at Springwood Primary School combines flexible teaching spaces with sensory provision and outdoor learning areas to support pupils’ day-to-day education.
