The Walnut Group, Preston

August 5, 2018 - News
This year we have chosen The Walnut Group, Preston, as our charity of the year and aim to raise thousands of pounds in the next twelve months. The Walnut Group is a Prostate Cancer support group.  We appoint a charity to support on an annual basis and we have already set out to complete a number of fundraising challenges.  We will be running in the Ribble Way Run on Sunday 9th September and will also be taking part in a sponsored bike ride around the Guild Wheel, a Go Kart Challenge and a Black Tie event in the new year, with all proceeds going to The Walnut Group.Michael Conlon, Chairman said;

We have chosen The Walnut Group as our main focus of support for 2018/19 following the sad loss of Michael O’Donnell, one of our former Directors, to prostate cancer. We already have a number of events lined up and look forward to raising as much money as possible over the next 12 months.

Colin Piddington, Chairman of The Walnut Group said;

We were founded in 2010 to support local people affected by Prostate Cancer and to raise awareness of the disease. Help and support for newly diagnosed men and their families is provided along their journey benefiting from the diverse experiences of the group.

As a purely voluntary organisation, we are reliant upon the generosity of the public and our own members. Two years ago, the Group organised a PSA Testing Session at Preston North End’s Deepdale ground, which attracted more than 250 men, over 20 of whom were referred back to their own doctors as a result of the tests. Since that time, we have been asked by a number of people about the possibility of repeating the exercise, but the cost is not insignificant.

We meet at Vine House in Ribbleton on the first Wednesday of every month and new members are always welcome. We are very grateful to Conlon for their support and, in association with them, hope to organise  a number of testing sessions during 2018/19.
